Keeping calm with self-care: what every Parent needs to know
Parenthood is a journey like no other. Some days, you look into the eyes of your mini-me and can’t imagine what your life was like before they arrived. Others (let’s be honest, here) you’re pining for just a few more moments of privacy in the bathroom before tackling the next explosive nappy change or teething tantrum. We spoke with author and expert Becki Rabin, founder of the innovative Mamma Breathe app, about simple and effective ways to centre yourself amidst all the chaos and demands of parenthood. Because a little self-care can have some big benefits: both for you, and your baby.
Like every new parent, Becki found herself sometimes drowning in a sea of new responsibilities. “It was such a challenging time in early motherhood, with two unwell babies that had allergies and eczema. Sleep was non-existent and the constant worry and anxiety around their health left me exhausted, burnt out and dysregulated.”
Sound familiar? We thought so.
Mum on a mission
As a mindset coach and meditation teacher, Becki thought about solutions. “I knew how vital it was that I regulated my nervous syndrome. I fell in love with breathwork; it was so easy to implement and so effective in supporting me to regulate. I saw such a huge change in how I felt, how I showed up for my little ones, and how they responded too. I am on a mission to help mothers regulate their nervous systems in a way that is realistic, practical and highly effective.”
Your nervous system and you
We already hear you thinking, “but who has the TIME for that? And how do I know when my nervous system needs a tune-up?” According to Becki, it’s too important not to make time for. “Our nervous systems are the mothership to all the basic functions of our body. Controlling and coordinating bodily functions including movement, thought and emotion and plays a crucial role in the body’s internal balance. It can easily become dysregulated by chronic stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, overstimulation and prolonged periods of exhaustion.” Sounds like being a mum to us!
Staying regulated as a new mum
As for the answer to your second question—every new parent experiences disruptions to their nervous system, particularly mothers. “When you think of what a woman goes through, from carrying and growing a baby for 9 months to giving birth, to feeding and healing postpartum, sleepless nights, anxiety and hormonal changes, it’s so vital for a mother to stay regulated and learn tools to support herself.”
We couldn’t agree more with Becki. Did you know that 60% of mothers experience 3 or more signs of burnout and dysregulation in the first year after giving birth? If this sounds like you, your nervous system is in the market for some much-needed TLC.
An app that supports your needs
With the Mamma Breathe app, Becki has created a toolkit for mums. Offering breathwork practices, mediations and hypnosis tracks, it’s like always having a quick therapy session in your pocket. We asked Becki for a quick rundown on what these 3 methods are and how they can help.
Breathwork that soothes your brain
Described by Becki as a “scientifically proven practice that involves changing the way you breathe and using different breathing patterns that signal to your brain that it’s safe to calm down,” breathwork is a simple way to regulate your emotions and is best used in moments of heightened stress or on a daily basis to gradually regulate body and mind. “It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is your body’s rest and relax response,” says Becki. And don’t let the science stump you—it couldn’t be simpler to practice.
“Our breathwork practices on the app are between 5-10 minutes long. Some can be done on the go, whilst doing chores and looking after your little ones,” shares Becki. “It’s a highly effective way to help mothers calm down in moments of stress, get to sleep when feeling overstimulated, and help you to regulate emotions so that you aren’t so reactive, stressy or emotional.” Sign us up!
Meditation, mum-style
Chances are you’ve come across (or even tried!) meditation before. The Mamma Breathe app puts its own unique spin on it. “We use guided meditations that are specifically designed for mothers to help them feel positive and full of energy, to fill their cup back up. As well as guided visualisations to support stress and find moments of peace,” Becki explains. “We also have meditations that help mothers find clarity on their identity, feel confident again and get their spark back.”
Hypnosis to heal
Finally, if you want to go a bit deeper, Mamma Breathe also features a powerful tool for rewiring your mind and subconscious beliefs: hypnosis. According to Becki, “Many of us mother and show up in motherhood as a mirror to what we saw growing up. If our mothers were always stressed, sad or angry, we learn that is what being a bother is and subconsciously we can show up the same way. We are also conditioned by society to believe that in order to be a good mum we must put everyone else first, so we have learnt to do that.”
Are you nodding along like we are? You’re going to love what comes next. “You can use hypnosis to rewire your subconscious beliefs, to truly embed the belief that it’s okay to feel good, and that it’s important to build your self-worth and confidence postpartum,” says Becki. Now that’s a revelation!
Calm mamma, calm child
Now that you know a bit about it, do you need more reasons to download the Mamma Breathe app? We’ve got the ultimate one: having a calm mum can make your child calmer as well.
“It is so vital for a mother to stay regulated and to learn tools to regulate to support her with her responses and reactions, her mood, her emotions and hormones and most importantly, our children’s nervous systems are linked to their mother’s for the first 5 years. So, when a mother is regulated, her child too is calm and regulated,” Becki says.
“The whole mission with Mamma Breathe is to help everyone understand that a happy, calm, healthy mother is the core of a healthy, happy and calm household. We want to help mothers put themselves higher up the ‘to-do’ list, because not only will they show up as a more energised and calmer mother to their family—they are also teaching their children to do the same too. Our children are learning everything about self-care, self-love and what they are worthy of by watching how their mothers do or don’t do it. So, when we put ourselves last, we teach our little ones to do the same too.”
Becki continues, “Instead, you can teach your children to be caring to themselves. Between the ages of 0-7, our children are building their subconscious belief system and what they believe about themselves, the world, what they are worthy of, capable of having, and achieving, and doing. They learn all of that from their primary caregivers. When they see you caring for yourself, they will learn to do the same too.”
Final words of wisdom
To sum things up, Becki has some sage yet simple advice for every new mother. You’re going to want to write this down.
“Be kind to yourself and go slow. Stop comparing yourself to who you used to be and know that you’re doing the best you can and that is all you need to do. It’s about being who you want to be and showing up how you want to show up for your family. It isn’t easy at all, nobody is doing it all well,” urges Becki. “Look after yourself and you will find it all easier.”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! Now, what are you waiting for? Head on over to the App Store or the Google Play Store and download the Mamma Breathe app!
