Feeding Your Way: 4 Mantras Every New Parent Needs
Feeding Your Way: 4 Mantras Every New Parent Needs
We all want the best nutrition for our newborn. But letās be honest - thereās so many advice columns, opinions and endless studies regarding breast and formula feeding that it can easily become overwhelming. But hereās the truth: youāre doing great. At Joolz, weāre all about lifting parents up, because trying your best is more than enough. These 4 mantras? Stick āem on your mirror and remind yourself daily: youāve got this.
1. Support (and not judge) other parents.
Community-building is key, and the last thing any mother needs is pressure from society, family or friends. Especially in the age of social media - where anybody can document picture-perfect moments - this can be especially difficult. Donāt add to the damaging discourse online. That mum whose baby breastfeeds like a dream? Sheās also dealt with a public nappy explosion (probably this week). Weāre all just figuring it out. No judgment, just support.
2. As a new parent, I have my own unique journey.
Every mother, and every baby, is different. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to feeding, no matter what medical experts or breast-feeding advocates say. Perhaps pumping and bottle-feeding is what works best for your family. Or maybe milk production is stunted, and formula is the best way to give your baby what they need. Then there are those babies who latch easily and prefer mamaās nipple. Guess what? The magic answer might just be a combination of all three!
3. Breastfeeding can be difficult for both
Weāre sure youāve spent time on various mummy blogs, some of which can be quite opinionated regarding natural breastfeeding. And while some online voices swear thereās only one right way: the best way is the one that works for you. After all, the most important thing is that your baby is fed and loved. If latch issues, low supply or even extreme physical discomfort are prohibiting you from giving baby the breast, donāt feel guilty or āless thanā. Surround yourself with supportive people. We could all do with less judgment and more self-care.
4. Feeding is just a small part of parenthood
Formula feeding is love. Breast feeding is love. The fact that youāre reading this article about how best to nourish your baby is love. But thatās only one aspect of nurturing your baby. Donāt forget the power of presence, touch and words are for your little one. As long as your baby is getting the nutrients it needs, the feeding method you choose is just one factor when it comes to raising a healthy and happy child. Bonding, play time and discovering the great, wide world together all have a huge impact on your childās development.
